I met Jonathan Archer last week at the parsonage. Several men from the church were there to unload furniture. We set a time for an interview so I could write about Protection’s newest residents.
I enjoyed telling him all about our town and showing him the July through October issues of the county newspaper, The Western Star & Protection Press.
It seemed to me no matter how busy he was preparing his new home so his wife and children could join him, doing his online studies, preparing for Wednesday night’s time with K-6 children, he took time to meet with me on the feature story. I hope people in town will make a special effort to meet Jonathan and his family. They are going to be a nice addition to Protection.
Artwork, Tablescapes
The Protection Township Library has had quite a few artists display their work in the Stan Herd Art Gallery this year. Rex Rosenberg from Great Bend has had his photos displayed during October.
I saw them on Monday of this week. Several were of lightning storms, an eagle in flight, city landscapes, ballet dancers, a farmer leaving his combine in the field at sunset.
He left a note by the guest book: “Usually when sculpture, paintings, photographs, and other types of artwork are created and displayed, titles are applied to each piece by the artist.
“For this exhibition of photography, however, titles were not applied. You are invited to sign the guest book, but also to provide any title or comments you think fits or is appropriate, noting the number of the photo or photos for which you provide that information.”
On the table was also a postcard showing a 1995 Subaru covered with 70 pounds of dentures and partials, 70 pounds of dental impressions, dozens of empty toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, dental tools, and other items related to dentistry.
Rosenberg, 80, previously lived in Hoisington and Hudson.

Harvesting crops and planting wheat were postponed again late Saturday night as the predicted rain arrived. My daughter Amy and her husband Shane stopped to visit me Sunday afternoon and the rain started up again. It was a nice slow rainfall during Monday. My rain gauge showed just over an inch when I checked it Tuesday morning.
