South Central sophomores Bretlynn Westrup and Madi Hensley had the opportunity to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Kansas Seminar, in Manhattan this summer.
HOBY is a youth leadership organization that brings high school sophomores together to develop their leadership skills, meet other students from across the state and discover ways they can make a difference in their schools and communities.
During the HOBY Kansas seminar, students participate in leadership activities, hear from speakers, work together in groups and take part in service-oriented experiences. The program encourages students to recognize their own strengths while also learning how to communicate, work with others, and become more involved in their communities.
HOBY was much more than simply attending a leadership camp. Both girls found the experience extremely memorable and came away feeling that it had made a lasting impact on them.
Along with developing their leadership skills, the girls had the opportunity to meet fellow students, hear new perspectives, and form friendships with young leaders from across Kansas. Each year SCHS chooses two sophomores to attend the leadership camp.
