Introducing Rebel Mahieu, Kids’ Art Instructor
Rebel Mahieu is a Kansas artist and longtime art educator who spent more than 15 years teaching art at Colby Community College. A native of north-central Kansas, she grew up on a farm near Glen Elder and earned an Associate of Arts degree from Cloud County Community College before studying commercial design at Kansas State University. She later earned a bachelor’s degree in Art Education with an emphasis in printmaking and a master’s degree in sculpture from Fort Hays State University.
Before joining Colby Community College in 2008, Rebel taught middle-school art in Russell. At Colby, she taught courses including Art Appreciation, Art History, design, and studio art while encouraging students to experiment with materials, ideas, color, and personal expression. In 2017, she received the college’s Tangeman Award for Teaching Excellence, an honor recognizing an outstanding instructor.
Rebel is also a practicing artist whose work frequently incorporates sculpture, printmaking, collage, mixed media, and layered materials. Her work has been exhibited throughout the region, including a solo exhibition, Master of Ceremonies, at the Deines Cultural Center in Russell. She has also been active in promoting community arts through gallery walks, exhibitions, and the Colby Community College Art Club.
Her involvement in the arts extends beyond the classroom. She has served on the board of High Plains Public Radio and has participated in regional arts organizations and exhibitions. In 2024, she served as juror for the Nebraska Art Teachers Association Art Educator Exhibit.
After many years of teaching and encouraging artists in northwest Kansas, Rebel resigned from her position at Colby Community College in 2024. She currently teaches history at South Central.
