South Central Cross Country Attends Cheney Meet

The South Central cross country runners — who have been idle for a week after the Pratt meet was canceled because of rain — were back in action last Thursday at the Cheney Invitational at Cheney Lake State Park.

In the boy’s varsity race, Denin Johnson took 24th with a time of 19:22.67, Dominic Macias was 30th with a time of 19:59.55 andJacob Reed was 51st with a time of 22:47.35.

In the girl’s varsity race, Breckyn Snyder was 27th with a time of 25:20.17 and Sophia Hernandez was 34th with a time of 26:44.54.

In the boy’s junior varsity race, Gavin Martin was 15th with a time of 35:19.29.

“The runners all did amazing,” said head coach Tori Selzer. “This is a very flat course and, instead of running on a golf course, they run through trees. This is more of a ‘trail run’ at Cheney.

“Thinking ahead and taking positions and making moves to set yourself up for success at this meet is important. Lots of curves, blind corners, trees and narrow trails. But it’s usually a very welcome distraction and change of pace as well as a confidence boost with their improved times having a more level terrain.”

The Timberwolves will head to Ness City for the league meet this Thursday. Selzer said that, just because it’s league doesn’t mean that the competition will get harder, noting that everyone will face the same course and condition. So she wants the runners to show up, run their own race and compete at the level she knows they can.

“I want them to finish that race proud of the effort they put into it even if their placing and times don’t reflect that,” she said. “We are here to challenge ourselves and put all we can into everything we do.”
