Protection residents brought back a tradition many had missed for years with the return of Funfest this past weekend.
Funfest was originally held annually from 1988 through 1999, followed by a one-time event in 2003. This year, a local committee came together to revive the celebration, with plans for Fun Fest to become an annual event once again.
The three-day celebration featured activities for residents and visitors of all ages, including a car show, a sloshball tournament, live music from local talent, a street dance, food trucks and a community church service.
Four teams competed in the sloshball tournament, with the Alcoballics taking home the championship.
The event was made possible in part through several auctions and fundraisers held beforehand to raise money for the celebration.
Despite temperatures climbing above 100 degrees throughout the weekend, the community turned out in large numbers to support the event. Former Protection residents also returned to town to participate in the festivities and lend a hand in making the event a success.
The strong turnout and community support demonstrated that Funfest still holds a special place in the hearts of Protection residents – both past and present.
With this year’s successful return, organizers are looking forward to continuing the tradition and making Fun Fest an annual community celebration.
