Local 4-Hers Have Alternatives for Poultry

KINGMAN – Although a statewide ban on poultry movement means Kingman County Fair contestants can’t bring their birds to be judged, alternative arrangements have been made for those who raised poultry for their projects.

Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health earlier issued a stop movement order to protect the state’s poultry industry and promote stronger bio-security practices. All types of poultry activities where birds from different flocks are co-mingled are included in the order, which will last until the end of the year. No birds can be shown at county fairs and festivals, the Kansas State Fair, swap meets, exotic bird sales and live bird auctions and the like.

Extension agent Andrea Wood said Kingman County 4-Hers enrolled in poultry projects are encouraged to bring photos of their birds to show the judge. They can also bring stuffed chickens and ducks for showmanship.

“They are encouraged to make a poster or display to show off their flock and birds,” Wood said. “It can be any ideas about poultry.”

Essentially, 4-Hers with poultry entries will put together an educational display.

KDA said the stop movement order is an effort to prevent the spread of avian influenza (bird flu). A bird in Leavenworth County tested positive in March.

In addition, poultry producers are being asked to monitor flocks for symptoms of the illness and notify KDA immediately if they suspect problems. KDA Division of Animal Health can be reached at (785) 564-6601.
