Wilmore News 10-8-26

By Ernst Griffin

Well we made it back to Wilmore for the 44th time. We’ve been going back and forth from California for 22 years, twice a year makes 44 trips. Multiply that by 1 tire a year, that’s 22 tires just in blowouts. Gas: 30-gallon tank, fill up 5 or 6 times, 150 to 180 gallons, start NOW in California at $5.65 a gallon (at Costco) and get down to a low of $3.94 in Oklahoma and up to $4.20 in Kansas. Tune ups: 2 times a year from $200 to $3,000. We’ve always driven 1,337 miles one way because we have the big dogs and they can’t fly. We take a few variations on the route due to the weather, and by now we never use it to go anywhere else. We can’t go to sleep in it!

Wilmore is looking good, needs a little trimming up in parts of town. The sweet potato vine in front of the old bank/museum killed everything else in the pot and took over, it looks great.

They had some rock brought in to the main road, Railroad Ave. and it has leveled out the road pretty well. That would be a civic improvement. The City Council also bought a new air conditioner for the community center/library. It started to get hot in there and floor tiles started to ooze, so the air conditioner solved all that.

Betty Yost had surgery on her shoulder the end of August and is doing well, and going to physical therapy. Way to go Betty.

The carousel is open and ready to go. We got here Friday, opened the carousel on Saturday. Swept and blew out some of the summer dust. A family from Hudson, Kansas stopped by in the afternoon for a ride, I said we haven’t got it all cleaned up yet, they didn’t care, rode every horse and helped with the dusting. It’s always dirtiest after summer. Ernie put on new feathers, we hung up our new sign and it looks good as new. Come for a ride.

RAIN! We had a small storm Friday, thunder and 1 1/2 inches of rain, a tornado touched down outside of town. Rain possible Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 1 inch so far. We actually have some new grass coming up in our yard.

We had a great day at church on Sunday, a good turnout, good music and a great brunch afterwards. Barbara Delaney wasn’t there because she is on a trip with her son, daughter and niece to Memphis and Nashville. Have a good trip Barbara and all. Bob stayed home to look after the dogs and the home place.

Thanks for having me, see you next week.
