South Central Runners Compete at St. Johns Meet

The South Central cross country runners competed at the St. Johns meet in Stafford Thursday morning.

In the boy’s varsity race, Corbett Heaton was 14th with a time of 19:37.44, Denin Johnson was 24th with a time of 20:36.86 and Dominic Macias was 82nd with a time of 27:18.88.

In the girl’s varsity race, Breckyn Snyder was 35th with a time of 26:18.55 and Sophia Hernandez was 40th with a time of 27:15.81.

In the boy’s JV race, Gavin Martin was 45th with a time of 37:51.09.

“I thought the runners put out a lot of effort for the St. John meet,” said head coach Tori Selzer. “It was a tough rolling hill course.”

She said she doesn’t compare times meet to meet because every course is different. Also, there are a number of runners who are new to cross country, so it’s hard to compare times when they didn’t run last year.

Selzer said the heat has taken its toll and the runners are ready for cooler temperatures. The Timberwolves will next attend the Larned meet on Thursday, Sept. 24.

“This next week we have our first meet in the afternoon and will run around 4:30 to 5 as opposed to 11 to 12,” Selzer said. “So I’m curious to see how they handle it then. Looking forward to it though.

“They are all looking forward to cooler weather — we hope it holds together this week and stays as cool as they say.”
