OBITUARY: Sue Ann Shepherd

Sue Ann Shepherd passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 69 years of age, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband Michael, her daughter, Kaitrin Kilgore (Steven), and her son, Jay Stubbs (Bridget). She also leaves behind her brother, Leo Steven Shepherd (Gail), her sisters, Sandra “Jo” Gayle Vanderbeek (Hank) and Janet Elizabeth Hilton (Mike), and many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Sue was preceded in death by her brother Lowell Scott Shepherd, and her sister Cheryl Lyn Sayler (Don).

Sue was born June 11, 1953, in Kingman to parents Walton Leo and Margaret Elaine Shepherd, attending Kingman Elementary and Kingman High School. The youngest child of six, Sue kept pace with her older brothers, playing sports, exploring the McCutchen farm, incurring broken bones during soccer matches, and playing softball. She also played the flute and was a drum major. After briefly studying at Kansas State University, Sue attended Clark’s Business School in Topeka, where she studied court reporting.

On June 2, 1971, Sue married Joeash Clark “J.C.” Stubbs, who preceded her in death. The two lived in Phoenix before returning to Kansas to live in Wellington, where Sue worked for the Sumner County District Court and where her daughter and son were both born. Sue served as a court reporter for 15 years, also working at the Harper County Courthouse in Anthony and the Kingman County Courthouse in Kingman.

Sue was remarried to Michael Shepherd on March 14, 2020, after the pair met in 2018. Michael and Sue resided in Lee’s Summit, Mo., where they enjoyed watching sports, being outdoors, listening to live music, traveling, puzzles, and visiting family and friends.

The world has lost a bright and shining star, but that light continues to shine in the hearts and lives of Sue’s family, friends, and acquaintances. She brought to everything she did an unshakeable positivity, a near-constant sunny personality, and a big smile. She will be missed.

Services will be held at Walnut Hill Cemetery, Kingman, on Friday, July 21, at 1 p.m.
