US Stocks Move Lower in Midday Trading

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks indexes are moving lower in midday trading as an early advance evaporates.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 94 points, or 0.6 percent, to 16,236 as of 11:45 a.m. Eastern time Wednesday.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gave up six points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,935 and the Nasdaq composite declined nine points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,747.

The price of oil fell 72 cents to $45.63 a barrel in New York. It plunged 2 percent the day before.

U.S.-listed shares of Volkswagen jumped 5 percent. The automaker’s CEO announced his resignation as the company tries to move beyond a damaging scandal surrounding cheating on emissions tests.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.16 percent.
