China Worries Weigh Down US Stock Trading

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. indexes are falling at midday, weighed down by a drop in China’s stock market.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 196 points, or 1.1 percent, to 17,152 as of 12 p.m. Eastern time Thursday. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 21 points, or 1 percent, to 2,058. The broad index has fallen into negative territory for the year.

The Nasdaq composite, meanwhile, fell 80 points, or 1.6 percent, to 4,938.

Walt Disney slid $5.30, or 5 percent, to $101.15 on concerns that more television watchers are moving away from cable, which could hurt Disney properties like ESPN.

The price of oil rose 12 cents to $41.39 a barrel in New York but has plunged 18 percent over the last month.
