BRUSSELS (AP) — Greece has given the go-ahead for a big debt repayment to the International Monetary Fund due Tuesday, as eurozone finance ministers in Brussels discuss the country’s troubled rescue program.
A senior Greek government official in Athens said Monday that the order has been given to repay the debt worth 757 million euros ($844 million). He asked not to be named pending the formal payment of the money.
European officials say they did not expect a breakthrough in talks with Greece at Monday’s meeting.
The ongoing delays sent shares on the Athens Stock Exchange down 2.5 percent Monday while two-year borrowing rates again rose above 21 percent.
