{"id":97037,"date":"2025-11-19T09:15:21","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T15:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kcnonline.com\/wp\/?p=97037"},"modified":"2025-11-19T09:15:24","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T15:15:24","slug":"state-chamber-backs-reading-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kcnonline.com\/wp\/2025\/11\/19\/state-chamber-backs-reading-reforms\/","title":{"rendered":"State Chamber Backs Reading Reforms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Nuria Martinez-Keel, Oklahoma Voice<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OKLAHOMA CITY \u2013 Leaders of Oklahoma\u2019s business community say the state must improve its poor literacy outcomes with major reforms, including holding back students who fall behind in reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">State Chamber officials on Monday unveiled their latest education-focused campaign, called \u201cOklahoma Competes,\u201d during a State of Business Forum. Along with supporting retention of struggling students, chamber leaders said they will urge Oklahoma lawmakers to dedicate more funding to reading coaches and other literacy initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to resource it right,\u201d Rick Nagel, who leads the chamber\u2019s executive committee, told news reporters Monday. \u201cWe\u2019re going to have to invest some money. We can\u2019t save our way out of this one.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chamber, a major voice in the state\u2019s public policy pursuits, joins a growing chorus calling for improvements to early literacy in Oklahoma, where only 27 percent of third graders scored proficient or advanced on the state reading test last school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better reading outcomes are foundational for Oklahoma\u2019s future workforce and the state\u2019s ability to compete for business investment, chamber leaders said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third grade is widely considered a milestone year in literacy education because from fourth grade onward, a child must have mastery of basic reading skills to succeed in other school subjects, a concept known as \u201creading to learn.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oklahoma law previously required children to repeat third grade if they scored poorly on the state reading test starting in the 2013-14 school year.
