{"id":102489,"date":"2026-06-11T09:33:54","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T15:33:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kcnonline.com\/wp\/?p=102489"},"modified":"2026-06-11T09:33:55","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T15:33:55","slug":"immigration-enforcement-bill-signed-into-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kcnonline.com\/wp\/2026\/06\/11\/immigration-enforcement-bill-signed-into-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Immigration Enforcement Bill Signed Into Law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Jennifer Shutt, States Newsroom<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 President Donald Trump significantly bolstered funding for immigration enforcement Wednesday when he signed into law a nearly $70 billion package that will keep key federal agencies operating without any new restrictions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats pressed for guardrails after immigration officers shot and killed two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis in January. But when talks broke down, Republican lawmakers drafted their own bill without any additional constraints.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe bill provides crucial funding for domestic law enforcement investigations and combating child exploitation, continuing our work to restore law and order across our nation, and to protect America\u2019s youth,\u201d Trump said during an Oval Office event.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure moved through Congress this month with nearly every Republican voting to approve the additional spending, which will last through September 2029.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democratic lawmakers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/top-dems-congress-list-ice-constraints-they-want-funding-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a>&nbsp;immigration officers should adhere to the standards other federal law enforcement agencies follow, like wearing body cameras, getting a warrant from a judge before entering someone\u2019s home and identifying themselves by removing masks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican leaders said during talks they were open to instituting limitations on how immigration officers behave, but opted not to include any curbs in their party-line bill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ICE, CBP funded<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The law will provide Immigration and Customs Enforcement with another $38.53 billion. Customs and Border Protection will receive an additional $26.02 billion and the secretary of Homeland Security will be given $5 billion more in funding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The money is in addition to the $170 billion Republicans&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/how-megabill-allows-trump-expand-mass-deportations-curb-immigrant-benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">included<\/a>&nbsp;in their \u201cbig, beautiful\u201d law, as well as the funding&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/three-shutdowns-later-trump-signs-bill-finishes-funding-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a>&nbsp;in the annual DHS appropriations package.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly every Republican in the House&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/republicans-congress-clear-final-hurdle-70b-boost-immigration-enforcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted<\/a>&nbsp;to approve the measure, though New Jersey Rep. Thomas H. Kean, Jr., who has been absent due to an undisclosed illness, and South Carolina Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, who were competing in their state\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/scdailygazette.com\/2026\/06\/09\/evette-wilson-head-to-runoff-in-sc-governors-race-johnson-clinches-democratic-nomination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gubernatorial primary<\/a>, missed the vote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski was the sole Republican&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/republicans-push-70b-immigration-enforcement-through-us-senate-no-limits-ice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to vote against<\/a>&nbsp;approving the legislation in that chamber, writing in a statement negotiators should have worked out a bipartisan solution in the annual funding bill instead of using&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/how-republicans-congress-could-fully-fund-ice-years-come-and-maybe-do-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the complex budget reconciliation process<\/a>&nbsp;to get around procedural votes that would otherwise have required the support of 60 senators.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy choosing to appropriate funding for three fiscal years instead of one, this measure weakens the normal budgeting process and sets another precedent for avoiding it when we find ourselves in disagreement,\u201d she wrote. \u201cIn doing so, it reduces Congress\u2019 ability to apply reasonable checks on immigration policy for the remainder of this administration and into the next.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Murkowski added that she would have voted for the package had it \u201cprovided immigration funding for one year, included clear restrictions on what those funds can be used for, and eliminated any potential for taxpayer dollars to be allocated to the administration\u2019s brazen \u2018anti-weaponization\u2019 fund.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That $1.776 billion account would have paid restitution to people who believe they were wrongly prosecuted by the Justice Department. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/trump-administration-dumps-177b-anti-weaponization-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testified<\/a>&nbsp;before Congress the administration wasn\u2019t planning to proceed with that proposal after Republicans on Capitol Hill voiced opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump, however, hasn\u2019t completely retracted his support for the fund, saying in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/read-transcript-president-donald-trump-interviewed-nbc-news-meet-press-rcna348508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an NBC News interview<\/a>&nbsp;this weekend that he and other Republicans believe it \u201cis a great idea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have to get it approved,\u201d he said. \u201cIf they get it approved, that\u2019s great.
